Benefits

  • Dependable, fast growing
  • Versatility, can be used as a windbreak, screen or noise filter
  • Endures extremes of heat and cold


Possible Problems

  • Too much water may result in chlorotic foliage
  • Susceptible to pine tip moth
 

Austrian Pine

Hardiness Zone 4
Requirements:
  • Exposure: Full sun
  • Water: Water every week to every month in warmer climates
  • Soil: Adapted to a variety of soils, even alkaline soils
  • Maintenance: Requires little maintenance

Benefits

  • Has durability in adverse conditions
  • Resistant to pine tip moth
  • Foliage is a rich, dark green, very beautiful


Possible Problems

  • Pine twig blight may be serious in some seasons
  • Very sensitive to herbicide drift
 

Eastern Redcedar

Requirements:
  • Exposure: Full Sun
  • Water:Water once or twice a week until established
  • Soil: Prefers a good, well drained soil
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance

Benefits

  • Moderate to rapid grower
  • Responds well to fertilization
  • Winter color


Possible Problems

  • Bag worms, spider mites and Juniper blight are possible
  • Susceptible to cedar apple rust
 

Italian Stone Pine

  • Exposure:Full to reflected sun
  • Water:Every week until established, then once a month
  • Soil: Most all soils
  • Maintenance: Prune to direct growth

Benefits

  • Moderate grower
  • Imposing specimen in the landscape
  • Great for shade or skyline


Possible Problems

  • Must have ample space for growth
 

Japanese Black Pine

Pinus thunbergiana

Hardiness Zone 6
Requirements:
  • Exposure: Full Sun
  • Water: Every week until established, then once a month
  • Soil: Wide range of soil types
  • Maintenance: Little or none

Benefits

  • Rapid grower
  • Very tough
  • Transplants easily


Possible Problems

  • Pine tip moth could be a problem on younger trees
  • Sensitive to herbicide drift
 

Live Oak

Quercus virginiana

Hardiness Zone 7
Requirements:
  • Exposure: Full Sun
  • Water: Low water use after established
  • Soil: Tolerant to poor and/or abused soils
  • Landscape Size : 60' Tall X 70' Wide

Benefits

  • Native Texas at its best
  • One of our largest shade trees
  • Responds well to a good nutrition program


Possible Problems

  • Ball forming insects. These are unsightly, but not particularly harmful
  • Mushroom root rot on old trees in wet locations.
